Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of mental disorders in the antagonist female characters of Bollywood horror films, specifically "Raaz" (2001) and "Raaz 3: The Third Dimension" (2012). Using Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection as a framework, the research reveals how these depictions contribute to women's passive and marginalized representation within society. Employing qualitative methods and textual analysis, the study investigates the intersection between the portrayal of mental illness in these films and the perpetuation of patriarchal norms in Indian culture. The findings suggest that the portrayal of women experiencing mental illness reinforces the dominance of men within India's patriarchal framework by subjecting women to a state of societal rejection.
