Abstract

As the capital of China, some institutions of higher education in Beijing offer Malay language programs as lingua-franca in Southeast Asia to their students. Therefore, this study aims to examine the motivation and duration of learning Malay Language to students in two leading universities in Beijing and their language attitudes. Quantitative methods by using questionnaires was conducted to collect data to obtain an overview of the situation among Chinese students in Beijing. A total of 20 students from Peking University and China Communications University were involved in this study. The findings show that instrumental motivation is a major factor in learning Malay language. Most of them are able to master Malay Language within 2 to 3 years. In terms of language attitudes, the students at both universities in Beijing are practicing positive language attitudes towards the Malay language. A total of 78.5% of students acknowledge that they can understand Malay culture and customs through Malay language learning. The Chinese student exchange program under the Malay language program to Malaysia has spurred more active and effective Malay language learning. In conclusion, Beijing students who are studying the Malay language program are interested in Malay language and practicing positive language attitudes in upholding the position of Bahasa Melayu in China
